Learning Python

Posted by Marc Backes on Friday, 6 November, 2009

PythonToday I decided to learn a new programming language! As I am a Linux user (and fan hehe), the programming language Python is crossing my ways very often. So I decided to learn it. “Can’t be that difficult I thought”.

The tutorial I made is the official Python tutorial for Python 3.x.

What I read (and tried) until now is incredibly easy. The syntax is very near to pseudo code and the handling is very simple. You do net even have to declare variables. So there is the first minus for me… no type safety. For beginners it might be an advantage, but for real programmers it is very weird.

Ubuntu 9.10 Final Release

Ubuntu 9.10 released

Today, big Ubuntu day! The final release of version 9.10 (Codename “Karmic Koala“) was released today!

Unfortunately I don’t have time until Sunday to set it up on my system. Also the planned automatic backup script is uncompleted and needs more testing.

So until Sunday, I can’t write much about it. I just know that there is a new thing called “Application Center” and the online synchronization tool called “Ubuntu One” is embedded.

On Sunday I can probably provide a little more information about the new version ;) Sorry for disappointing you with a lack of information here…

iPhone 3G S

Posted by Marc Backes on Thursday, 15 October, 2009

iPhone 3G SYesterday, I finally managed to set up a cell phone contract.

With the contract, I also got an iPhone 3G S. I always wanted to try a thing like that and well… now I have the chance to ;)

The first steps were a little bit weird, because I had to activate the phone with iTunes. Which is not available for Linux. And then they didn’t want to accept Austria as my location, because my credit card is from Luxembourg. But after that little problem, it was ready to use.

Which Linux distribution is best for you?

Posted by Marc Backes on Wednesday, 7 October, 2009

ChooserToday, I found a link of an interesting test, which finds out which Linux distribution is the best for you. The following questions always depend on the questions you already answered. So it is even understandable for non-geeks ;)

The result for me was 100% Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Sounds perfect… I started on a Linux Mint system after which I fastly switched to Ubuntu :)

Remember the Milk – Smart add

Posted by Marc Backes on Tuesday, 29 September, 2009

It’s been a while since I logged in the last time into “Remember The Milk” (an online todo list service). But today it was necessary again, and I noticed some changes.

The biggest chance is the so-called “Smart add”. When until now you needed to enter the description of the todo item first and then set up the time, priority, etc., now it is possible to do all of this in ONE line.

Example:

RTM - Smart add

How the new changes work, you can check out in the Remember The Milk blog!

(The changes have already been introduced 3 weeks ago)

Facebook application: FarmVille

Posted by Marc Backes on Wednesday, 23 September, 2009

For those of you out there using Facebook, you’ve probably hear about the application “FarmVille“.FarmVille

If you wonder what the hell is it about, here you go: It is a game where you are a farmer and you can seed plants on your fields, and harvest them when they are ready (but early enough. If you wait too long, they are going to wither). The more stuff you harvest the more coins and -so called- “experience points” (XPs) you get, the higher you climb up in your level.

Codename for Ubuntu 10.04 is “Lucid Lynx”

Posted by Marc Backes on Monday, 21 September, 2009

Ubuntu LogoAt the Atlanta Linux Fest 2009, Mark Shuttleworth announced via video the codename of the Ubuntu version 10.04, coming out in April next year. The name will be “Lucid Lynx“.

Lucid sounds great, but I would be happier with Llama instead of Lynx. But I know that the OS is going to be LEGENDARY anyway ;)

Lucid Lynx will be the next LTS (Long Term Support) version of Ubuntu: 3 years support for the edition and 5 years for the server edition.

Where do you get your news from?

Posted by Marc Backes on Saturday, 29 August, 2009

There are some possibilities to get the current news: Buy newspapers, check news online with your computer, check news online via smart phone (or similar).

This poll might be a little unfair, because I guess that most of the people who read this blog are most online readers. But still… please vote below for your favorite way to get to know what is going on in the world

Shiretoko Webbrowser

Posted by Marc Backes on Monday, 17 August, 2009

By updating my Mozilla Firefox from 3.0.x (don’t remember the exact version) to 3.5.3pre, I was quiet surprised that they gave it another name: “Shiretoko“. At least this is the case in Linux. What I am more surprised of is that it is called like this ONLY in Linux. Requests to Windows and MAC OX users confirmed me that in their Webbrowsers the name didn’t change.

Now the question:

Why does Mozilla give Firefox another name? And why only to the Linux version?
I guess that either from 3.5.3 on it is called Shiretoko (the other users I asked only had the 3.5.2) or for some strange reason it is called differently now in Linux
