Projector workspace

Posted by Marc Backes on Thursday, 26 November, 2009

Some days ago I ordered a wireless keyboard for doing exactly this… making a workspace in the university with a projector! If you follow me on Twitter, probably you’ve already seen the picture, but if not, here a picture of it:

Projector workspaceIf you ever thought about doing that and you’re not sure “mmhhhh I don’t know if it would really be THAT awesome…”, I can tell you: IT REALLY IS AWESOME!!

Music: FAttY SPiNS

Since some weeks, I am “following” a guy (Ray William Johnson) on YouTube who has a pretty funny (twice-weekly) show. I am already a big fan, but what I found out several days ago is, that he has a Rap band.

Yeah, I know what you are thinking… “Marc? Rap?? WHAT UP!?”. But this the one and only Rap band I like (probably only because of that guy… and of course the lyrics :D ).

Well, I like that band and even if you’re not a rap fan, but fan of funny lyriks, check out those “FAttY SPiNS“…

Guitar: If A Song Could Get Me You

Posted by Marc Backes on Thursday, 22 October, 2009

Lately I was playing guitar with my buddy René, when we found it funny to just check the charts in the radio and try to play it on the guitar. Well, one of the songs was “If A Song Could Get Me You” by Marit Larsen.

After watching the YouTube video and finding the guitar chords online, I decided to give it a try. Well, it feels pretty good playing it. It is easy to play and has a very nice rythm!

So my recommendation of the day for the guitarists here: If A Song Could Get Me You by Marit Larsen ;)

iPhone 3G S

iPhone 3G SYesterday, I finally managed to set up a cell phone contract.

With the contract, I also got an iPhone 3G S. I always wanted to try a thing like that and well… now I have the chance to ;)

The first steps were a little bit weird, because I had to activate the phone with iTunes. Which is not available for Linux. And then they didn’t want to accept Austria as my location, because my credit card is from Luxembourg. But after that little problem, it was ready to use.

Which Linux distribution is best for you?

Posted by Marc Backes on Wednesday, 7 October, 2009

ChooserToday, I found a link of an interesting test, which finds out which Linux distribution is the best for you. The following questions always depend on the questions you already answered. So it is even understandable for non-geeks ;)

The result for me was 100% Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Sounds perfect… I started on a Linux Mint system after which I fastly switched to Ubuntu :)

Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze

Posted by Marc Backes on Thursday, 1 October, 2009

Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor BronzeToday, I went to a music store near my place (m-music) searching for a new set of guitar strings for my western guitar. The higher e-string broke while a friend tried to tune it differently.

The vendor showed me a set of regular string, but there were some others where I wondered what the difference is. And he told me that the Elixir Nanoweb strings have a coating of a very thin web around. They sound longer and are not squeaking while sliding. Plus, they are supposed to hold longer as usual string. After a try on a guitar with those strings, I decided to buy those -a little more expensive than usual- strings.

Facebook application: FarmVille

Posted by Marc Backes on Wednesday, 23 September, 2009

For those of you out there using Facebook, you’ve probably hear about the application “FarmVille“.FarmVille

If you wonder what the hell is it about, here you go: It is a game where you are a farmer and you can seed plants on your fields, and harvest them when they are ready (but early enough. If you wait too long, they are going to wither). The more stuff you harvest the more coins and -so called- “experience points” (XPs) you get, the higher you climb up in your level.

The BeatlesToday is a big day for all Beatles fans: All 13 Beatles albums came out today in a digitally remastered edition.

It’s possible to either buy the albums separately or the collecter’s box with all 13 albums plus extra material like videos etc.

I can’t tell so much about those remastered tracks because I haven’t heard them, but I am definitely going to hear one or the other remastered piece :)

Nice movie: Taking Woodstock

Posted by Marc Backes on Tuesday, 8 September, 2009

Taking WoodstockAs a spontaneous decision, my girlfriend and I went to the cinema picking the first movie on the list which was presented in English. The movie is called “Taking Woodstock“.

Basically it is about a guy (Elliot) who is living in the middle of nowhere and whom parents have an old, crappy motel. They have to pay back the money for the motel to the bank, but they don’t have any success with their business. Suddenly, Elliot reads in a news paper that the Woodstock festival could not take place because they took the authorization. So why not organizing Woodstock in his backyard?

It was a nice movie to watch, but not one of those where I think WOOOW! I would give it 7/10 points. It is s nice story where you see you step by step everything getting out of control.

The movie is based on a true story!

Hohner Blues Harp MS

As I am playing guitar now for 1 year and some month (well, I admit, I have to practice more, but yeah…) I decided to learn an instrument which fits to my guitar…  A HARP!

I went to a music store and let me informed a little bit abour harps. I ended in buying a beginner model: “Blues Harp MS” (diatonic –> 20 reeds) from “Hohner” in the C key. I decided for the C key because most of the learning books and songs on the Internet are based on this C key, and I was told that it is perfectly for harp beginners. Read the rest of this entry »
